On January 1, 2017 The Journey Neighbourhood Centre took possession of apartment OB3 at 80 Orenda Court. For years we have identified Orenda Court as part of our outreach area, but it has been a challenge to get people to come to the other side of the railway tracks. So, since Orenda Court wouldn’t come to us, we’ve come to them!
We have done Refresh at Orenda Court and we have had some children from the community come out to our programs at Ardglen over the years, but never enough. So, back in the Spring of 2016 we applied for a Safer and Vital Communities grant in partnership with Sheridan College, Peel Regional Police and the YMCA. We received the grant, and starting in the Fall of 2016, we started our preparations for opening a Centre in Orenda. We have met with our grant partners, surveyed residents in the community, held a meeting with agencies, organizations and the local government, hosted a safety meeting and most importantly on November 4, 2017 we held a Block Party in the lobby of 80 Orenda Court!
Then on January 1, 2017, through the support of CAPREIT management, we got the keys! We started preparing the space, purchasing the equipment and supplies, painting the walls, putting up the displays, signs and posters and on February 4, 2017 we held an open house for the community.
As of this writing we are talking with residents about the programs and events that are a priority for them, planning our March Break Day Camp and a series of events and focus groups. Our priority is to create an environment that is both comfortable and relevant for the Orenda Court community.
