Bursary Program

 

The Journey Neighbourhood Centre is pleased to make available a bursary program for students with a connection to The Journey for their post-secondary education.

The following criteria and process will assist you in applying for the bursary.

Eligibility

In order to be have an application considered, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  1. The applicant has been designated as eligible for OSAP funding as evidenced by a letter from OSAP stating this.
  2. The applicant has participated in The Journey Neighbourhood Centre programs/events as a participant, as a volunteer and/or as an employee. The applicant must provide a list of these activities, their role (Employee/Volunteer/Participant) in these activities, and number of hours involved for each.
  3. The applicant is enrolled for a minimum of ten days in a full-time or part-time in a public or recognized private college or university program as evidenced by a Verification of Enrollment Form. Similar resources should be used for out-of-province private colleges or universities.
  4. A copy of the official notice of the applicant’s tuition cost for the program to which the applicant has been enrolled.
  5. Applicants must provide a signed waiver and headshot photograph with their application permitting The Journey Neighbourhood Centre to release their full name and photo should they be awarded the bursary. No additional information about the successful applicant(s) will be shared publicly. Applicants will also agree to pay back the bursary if they withdraw from the program in time to receive their tuition back, prorated to the amount of tuition returned to the applicant.

Selection Process

The applicant will:

  • Complete the application form
  • Obtain 1 or 2 letters of reference (a minimum of one being an academic reference)
  • Prepare a short essay
  • Attend an interview with the selection committee
Letters of Reference

One or two letters of reference should be submitted. The letters should not be provided by an immediate family member (parent, aunt/uncle, spouse, grandparent, or child). The purpose of the letter(s) is to provide evidence that the applicant is of good character.

Essay

Select from one of these two themes:

  1. Write an essay of approximately 250 — 500 words outlining the impact living in the Journey Neighbourhood Centre area has had on your life as well as any involvement you have had with the Journey Neighbourhood Centre.
  2. Write an essay of approximately 250 — 500 words outlining the impact volunteering or working at The Journey Neighbourhood Centre has had on your life.

Essays should be typewritten to ensure legibility. The essay will be scored based on both content and style/presentation.

Note: Computers, printers and photocopiers at either Journey location can be used to complete the essay and application

Evaluation

A committee of three people named by the Journey Board will confidentially review the submissions and propose whom shall receive funding based upon criteria outlined in this document.

An applicant cannot sit on the committee nor can a member of their family. Board Members, the Executive Director and the Centre Manager are ineligible to apply.

Once approval of the Executive Director is received, the applicant(s) will be awarded the money as a direct payment to their university/college/post-secondary institution towards the cost of tuition. In the event that the applicant has already fully paid their tuition, the award will be made directly to the applicant.

Allocation

The funds shall be allocated based on the number of qualified applicants, the application evaluation scores, the funds available to be awarded and whether or not the applicant has previously received a Journey bursary.

The amount available to any one student in a given year will be not more than 50% of the program tuition cost for not more than two semesters in a 1-year period, and will not exceed $2,000. Students who have been awarded a bursary in one year may apply again in subsequent years, but may have a reduced chance of receiving funding compared new applicants.
